My first regret was not booking the restaurant we short-listed earlier. We thought more than a year was too exaggerated, but who knows when we started to make enquries on 11 months before our wedding, we were told that was a very "hot" day for wedding, many people booked their banquet 1.5 years in advance.

Second regret was due to my bridal shop. We were willing to pay more than most people because we read many good reviews on them, but gave me nothing but disappointment. I had a good discussion with my MA on the colours to use and the flowers for my hand bouquet, but they only informed my hubby on the evening before our wedding that they didn't order the flowers I wanted, and the MA had forgotten what are the colours I wanted for my makeup. My dad and auntie commented the flowers the bridal shop gave us looked like they were dying and they made my hand bouquet looked very auntish.

A friend who got her package from the same bridal shop through my recommendation (before my big day) was no better than me. One week before her wedding, the MA informed her that she had to do her make-up at around 3pm because her (the MA) relative's wedding was on the same day as my friend's, it was naturally that relative would expect her to do the makeup, thus she couldn't give my friend her time. It was really rush as my friend had to go back to her parents' house for tea-ceremony, furthermore the usual Chinese wedding banquet would only start after 8pm and ends at around 11pm, how is her makeup going to last for 8 hours? I heard from her husband that she cried through the night because of the stress. IMO, the bridal shop should inform the bride earlier and get a replacement MA to serve my friend instead of telling the bride to handle her own makeup.

Last Saturday was an auspicious wedding date for many Chinese couples, my cousin was one of them. His wedding package was from Mandai Orchid Garden (solemnization ceremony and wedding dinner buffet for 230 guests). The caterer was Gustos Pte Ltd - part of Four Seasons Catering group.

There was a turnout of about 200-210 guests (including kids) that night. However, the overall food portions supplied by the caterer were insufficient and as a result, many guests did not eat their fill and left early. Shortly after dinner commence, we feedback to the catering manager to check why there was not enough food when the order was for 230 pax and also asked if they could do something about the it quickly. The caterer did not provide any solutions. The guests also experienced unprofessional service that night e.g. there was not enough serving plates, serving plates were wet, issues with sound system, chocolate fondue machines not working, and unprofessional service staff.

The quantity of the food supplied that day was definitely not enough for 200 guests. Key staple items such as butter rice and sushi were gone in about 15 minutes. And most of the food items were finished in less than an hour’s time when there is almost another 50% of the guests had not went for their first servings yet. None of the catering staff bothered to do something the faulty fondue machines and left the chocolates dried up.

    Some feedback from the guests
"I offered to get some roast lamb for our table of 10 persons, the station chef told me there were only 2 slices left. In the end I had to bring back only 2 slices of lamb to share among the 10 of us.", "I went back to the tempura station at least 3 times and was told each time by the catering staff there was no more prawns."

    Poor aftersales service

The caterer was not able to give a good explanation nor valid explanation for the major food shortage. On one hand, the caterer insisted that the food was prepared according to 230 pax, but maintained portions go by 1-serving-per-pax basis only. On the other hand they acknowledged that the food supply should not run out in less than an hour of the event.

During food tasting, the couple and their family had emphasized that food quality and quantity is of top priority. And it should not be compromised at any costs. The caterer gave assurance and yet their promise was not delivered. This was an unfortunate experience that happened to us and we hope to share this experience so that others can be more careful when it comes to selecting a reliable and responsible caterer or event planners.
