Can anyone tell the difference between white gold and platinum? i can't. But it seems that platinum is more expensive than white gold. what's so special about it?
I'm looking to buy wedding bands and many people have been telling me to get platinum ones cos it's better. What is so special and good about platinum.
Can someone advise?
Platinum is generally heavier. And the shine isnt like white gold, it wears out over time, but white gold can be replated at shops to regain the shine, and have it look less yellowish.
Cons are that plat cost 3x more than white gold, and it is not as easily mouldable/malleable. So its best to get the right size once and for all.
Next comes allergies. Platinum is hypoallergenic. Platinum is good for thosewith sensitive skin. usually 90 to 95 percent pure and will not irritate your skin. Platinum is also supposedly more durable, usually little metal loss when scratched. But definitely daily wear and tear, scratches etc.
Look out for the %tage, 850Plat (850PT) and 950Plat (950Pt)
i dont own any plat jewellery. Though i know tiffany engagement ring, the tiffany styled one comes in plat, the heaviness adds to the feel of it being solid on your fingers. maybe cos its comfort fit. heh.
I strongly recommend that you shop around for Platinum rings. I decided on Tiffany's platinum wedding bands as they were cheaper that those offered by local jewellers. Plus, they were heavy and felt more solid.
I guess Tiffany being a global MNC has the economies of scale when it comes to buying platinum, thus they're able to offer it at lower pricing than say Lee Hwa or Love&Co where their plain platinum bands cost $3000 and abv. I might as well get Tiffany which cost only around $2500.
Other companies that offer plat wedding bands are Goldheart and Soo Kee... Soo Kee's ones are quite nice, anyone knows the price range for a pair?![]()
Soo Kee charges around $3000 for one platinum ring. One and not a pair..Might as well go with Tiffany; their rings are heavier.
zjaninez:Omg! There goes my idea of getting a Soo Kee pair. Are Tiffany's $2500 each babe?
Forgot to mention..when shopping for rings make sure that you are comparing apples to apples. Good idea to know the weight of each ring so you can compare prices accurately.

yupz, Tiffany's 4mm platinum rings cost $2500 each. If you've got skinny fingers, can get the 2mm rings which cost around $2300, IIRC.
Defintely more worth it than Soo Kee or Lee Hwa's. Even Love&Co wanted $3350 for one plain platinum comfort ring.
i bought from goldheart many years back for my ROM wedding rings. from Japan and they used the highest grade of the platinum when i was researching on the grade. i think one of the main reasons its expensive is because its more rare than gold.
I bought my bands from Love & Co. They do have a range of platinum. From my recollection, they cost around $400 - $900 for one band, depending on the thickness and design. I think those above $1K are with diamonds and more details.
i would prefer white gold than platinum since it doesn't make sense to pay a higher price for something people don't really recognize.
Our wedding bands (milgrain series) are also from T & CO and despite Goldheart has similar (i wld say it's almost the same!) design in white gold, the weight of the platinum band feels more solid on our fingers.
if you intend to look at Pt bands, u can consider those plain ones from Cartier or Bulgari.. they aint too exp compared to the local shops...
anybody knows the price range for bulgavri's marryme series rings?
and.. goldheart intimo range.. is.. white gold or what?
