And plus I think price of gold has been going up (apparently doubled and more since 2001), so it's wise to keep old gold (assuming your present is pretty old since it's o-bi-ang) cos they are often of higher quality (compared to the cheap things like Taka nowadays).

Has anyone bought the Gem O'Lite Akoya pearls sold at Takashimaya dept store - Level 1? Are they genuine Akoya pearls, or just coated pearls? They look very shining n nicely rounded in shape. Worth buying?

^ do you know the price? If they are very exp , then they are real, if they are on the affordable side, the are not akoya, but maybe freshadamas.
Akoya pearls tend to be small, ranging in size from about 2 to 11 millimeters. They also tend to be the most consistently round and near-round pearls. The ones you show what size are they?

If they turn out not to be akoya don't diss them, because freshwater pearls are solid nacre, they are also quite durable, resisting chipping, wear, and degeneration.

Today i drop by Vivo city and pass by this pearl shop, think the name was Unique and saw a very cute pearl pendant. It was actually 2 pear shape pearl made into 2 mouse, a big mouse & a mini mouse! So cute but the price was totally not cute at all, $4k+! It can be use as a brooch too.

Anyway, can anyone share with me how do you differentiate the different quality of pearls?
What's the difference between those freshwater, ayoka, south sea etc? What grade are Mikimoto's pearl?
Can pearls really last and pass on for the next generation?

No of course not. 11mm is big. Anything from 8mm to 15mm is considered big.
I'm waiting for a pair of diamond and pearl earrings, they have 2 10mm Silver Black Tahitian pearls, it's a gift from my darling. I can't wait.
