Nickel tends to cause allergy in many people as well as silver. Silver oxidises easily when in contact with air, even your perspiration and perfume. This may trigger off an allergic reaction for some.
Rhodium is from the family of Platinum. Its is harder than silver or nickel and also has a better lustre than silver. Care must be taken as after all, it is just plated onto many of the accessories we have.
I learnt about this as i started doing my trade in costume jewelleries. I am also still learning more on all this things!![]()
Rhodium doesn't tarnish like silver. And people with allergies to silver is advised to wear rhodium as well. Rhodium is usually shinier, has a more polished feel to silver. But nowadays, it's still hard to really tell unless the shop is reputable and honest.
A good guage would be that rhodium wouldn't normally be sold at 3 for $10
To cheat of allergies, coat the earring hoop with a layer of clear nail varnish. It acts as a barrier against oxidation and your skin. This way, u can still buy those bargain earrings and wear them with no worries!
Hope this helps
For me I would buy bulk earring hooks 925 sliver so I can easily change the originals ( not 925) with pilers.
yes, there are people who are allergic to silver, but most often than not, it is the nickel they are allergic to inside the silver alloy.
some jewelleries are coated with nickel instead of rhodium... whichever coating, it will wear off in time. (this includes white gold plating)
u can always go back to the jewellery shop and ask them to recoat for a small fee...
