Sleeping pills cannot be bought OTC. It must be prescribed by doctors.

After insomnia for a couple of days, i'm sure your body will crash and you will get ur much needed sleep. That's what usually happen to me.

Why dun you turn to aromatherapy?

Last time I use to alternate between Lavendar and rosewood oil. Rosewood is the strongest and should be saved for emergencies only.

Otherwise, having a hot foot bath before bed works too. Normally, I have a hot water bottle at my foot.

Sleeping pills will have unreversible side effects like memory loss. Better stay away!!

Also, sleep is link to the stomach. If you have lousy disgestion or constant constipation, sleep is affected. Gotta treat the root of the problem and the symptoms will go off by themselves.

    HTHs.

    Take care

There are some herbal range of sleeping aid which you can get from GNC, Nature Farm and Fancl. For short term usage is fine but it is better to get to the root of your problem.

Don't get sleeping pills, if you have trouble sleeping get Melatonin.
take about 3mg first to see if it helps your insomnia, then slowly bump to 6mg.

Melatonin is safe, natural and produced by your body.

    It is not addictive.

If you're extremely sensitive to Caffeine then don't take any caffeinated product after lunch.

My friend has try a product from Advocated Three. They provide natural product which can help induce sleep without experiencing the side effects of drugs like sleeping pills at reasonable price. Have some try.

Sleeping pills you would need doctor's precription.
You can purchase herbal supplement from GNC (Natra Sleep around $61.95), it aids in relaxing your body and prepare for sleep.

Alternative you could also try Sleep Formula from Eu Yan Sang.

But most important is to determine if this is only a short term sleep pattern disruption? Work late, stress etc?
Or if you are suffering long term insomia, please see a doctor or a specialist to help you to re-establish a healthy sleep pattern.

    Ahappycherry,

try not to depend on sleeping pill, ok...
too much medication is no good.
if you have any problems that cause your insomnia... maybe you can solve the root of the problem

I have heard many good comments about Fancl house's sleep support on the insomnia thread and gave it a shot yesterday. Oh boy...it was so good that i overslept and missed my lecture. Haha..

I would advise people who suffer from insomnia to try this first before getting any sleeping pill. I have tried diazepam before but it was hard to fall asleep still....

Lavender essential oil seems to have some positive effects on me too

    Cheers.

Try melatonin. Drugstore.com has some OTC sleeping aids but these are antihistamines that I haven't seen locally. Namely Doxylamine and diphenhydramine.

And like everyone has said, sedatives are via prescription.

Those thinking of getting Melatonin, it might be a good idea to get the time-release ones. I hate waking up in the middle of the night and realize that I have to take another one because it's far from dawn.

Melatonin can be bought anywhere..like GNC, Ocean's, Kordel's those healthfood brands. They have diff potencies like 1mg, 3mg and also available in time release form. For me, i usually buy the 3mg....and it really works as i wake up feeling fresh after getting sufficient sleep. And u dun have to be dependent on it, once u're sleeping cycles are normal, u can stop it

I'll usually get my sleeping pills from my GP.

I have very serious insomnia since young but will always try other ways first before popping a sleeping pill (my last resort) to break the circle.

The last time I took was a year ago when I was overseas (my body only recognise my own bed )

I saw Melatonin being sold in Guardian. Why not try getting opinion from your GP first.

    hi amandy08,

thanks for telling me. i will go check out at your recommended place. though unnatural, i really have problem sleeping, perhaps too much pent up stress accumulated over work and people stree and need this temporarily solution to relax till my hectic work period tides over.

    hi TLC,

actually i sought doctor advice before. my mum, strangely has insomnia problem and she took the insomnia pills from our family doctor and it is "blue in color", dun know what is the name. but anyway according to GP lately, now government restricted selling sleeping pills through GP and we wonder why too till my family solved the puzzle ...perhaps now is economy crisis, more people are getting depressed and hence might use sleeping pills in a "wrong way" to drown oneself to sleep so government is restricting sales of sleeping pills
