Hi,

i just went for a routine medical checkup.
found a breast lump.
anyone suffer from such a condition before?
it feels rubbery and its movable.
my doctor have recommend me to see a specialist.
she says most likely that there will not be a major problem. but of course i m still worried. its my breast you are talking about!!! sigh...

Actually its very common for young girls like 18-24 to get breast lumps..most are non-cancerous! Not sure what causes them though... don't worry so much, just go for a biopsy and you'll know the results soon..

Dun worry abt it , go to a specialist to get it check.
I discover a breast lump few months ago.. its was rubbery and movable like yours... went to a specialist and luckily it was just a harmless lump... usually the specialist will check if there is any family history of breast cancer.. and your age play a important part too.. if you are young and without any family history of breast cancer, they will recommend you to go thru a ultrascan first.. if u want a more detailed check, you can go for a biopsy.. if the tests prove to be negative, you can go thru a small operation to remove the lump..

Will the ultrascan help?
or would u recommend to spend the money straight into a biopsy?

Ultrascan should give a accuracy of up to 98%..but if u want to set your mind at ease, you can go for a biopsy after that.... After the scan, it is also recommendedto come back every half a year for checkup just to make sure that the lump does not change in size.. For me, i went thru the ultrascan only cos i am thinking of removing the lump totally throught small op...

i have removed my 1st right breast lump when i was 22 yrs old, as it was my 1st breast lump found, i was very worried and wanted to remove it immediately as my aunt (dad's sister) died of breast cancer when she was only early 40s... they sent the lump for lab test and confirmed that its jus a benign breast cyst...

i found another lump in my left breast 4 yrs later and as usual, i wanted to remove it but i wasn't so worried as last time... after surgery, they sent the lump for lab test and again confirmed that its jus a breast fibroadenomas...

and just early this year, i have removed 5 breast lumps (2 in my left and 3 in my right). actually 1 year b4 i removed the 5, i have only 4 and went for ultrasound scans+needle biopsy, doc said should be breast fibroadenomas and can wait to see if they will disappear as time goes... but after 1 yr, they didn't disappear or become smaller, instead one more appear and became 5 in total... i decided to remove all of them and sent them for lab test... luckily, confirmed that its jus breast fibroadenomas...

my doc said its common for some young women to have breast cyst or fibroadenomas... and usually, it will re-appear again after a few years.. its still best to do a check up with specialist if you find anything abnormal in yr breasts jus in case its something cancerous... btw, i went for day surgury for the above 3 incidents...

My specialist actually ask me to monitor for 6 months before removing the lump as sometimes the lump may disappear as times goes by... . It is almost 4 months since i first discover my lump..and it is still there

Twinky, is it better to remove the lump even though it is just a harmless lump?

Does one with family history carries higher risks? but i read before somewhere, that, most breast cancer patients, are not with any family history....

yup, think most breast cancer patients don't have family history... quite scary though...

my frd is one of them and she was only 29 yrs old, married w/o kids when she found out to have stage 1 breast cancer. she removed the tumour and underwent radiotherapy for 6 months... she was considered recovered after the radiotherapy... 4 yrs later, today, she is still free from cancer but she has to see her doc for review every quarterly...plus she is now pregnant with her 1st bb...

if its harmless, the choice is yours but if u didn't remove it, ur doc will still advise u to go back for review on it every few mths or so...

for my case, i removed the previous lumps as i wanna rest my mind in peace instead of keep thinking how r the lumps doing inside my breasts... u also hv to be mentally prepared that chance of lumps reappear again...

oh yes, during my last surgery while i was still resting and waiting to discharge fm hospital, there was another young patient, teenager aged 17 yrs old only, removed her 1st small breast lump. her mother was sobbing quietly beside her bed... her doc has told her mother it was jus a breast fibroadenomas but she jus can't help worried that her daughter will have breast cancer in future...

i consoled the mother and told her my case, she was shocked to hear it ... i told her having breast fibroadenomas doesn't mean will have breast cancer in future...

btw, my doc took the pic of my 5 breast lumps and i got to keep it as memento... quite disgusting.. heehee...

i would have been traumatised...
is it necessary to remove? i just went for the ultrasound scan today. the doc say is 99.999% that its is benign and recommend me for a fine needle aspiration, she says that i dun need a surgery, but i still feel wierd having the lump in me... its 1cm and i dun have 2 big a breast so... i still feel unsafe.
btw can u still breast feed and all that?
i thk i will hate the scar
and how much is ur op? i went to a private. she charges about 1600 for the surgery and 350 for the fine needle aspiration...

just curious...after the removal of your breast lumps, does ur breast have any scars?
cos' i went through once as well and i had 3 lumps removed..now my breast has got slight scar marks....

i believe ur lump is benign based on ur doc's assurance, y don't u do the needle aspiration 1st and send it to lab testing... if confirmed its benign, u don't hv to worry too much or dun even need to remove it...

BUT if your decision is to remove it no matter what, then forgo the needle aspiration and head for surgery to remove the lump instead... u will have only 1 pain instead of 2 pains... for my 3rd one, i hv needle aspiration and surgery 1 year later...

just take note, even if u remove it now, chances of lumps reappearing in ur breasts in future r still there...

1st = done in old TTSH, i remembered it was subsidised rate and not over $1k for the surgery but i don't like the TTSH service... staff there seems like forever rushing for time...

2nd and 3rd = done in Mt Alvernia.. Mt A staff r so much better compared to TTSH thats y i rather go to Mt A again for my 3rd surgery... 2nd surgery costed ard $1.5K and 3rd one costed $4.4k as doc said too many lumps...

luckily for me, i was able to claim the last 2 medical charges from my company's surgical & hospitalisation insurance.

scar of 1st surgery was on areola area and the scar has faded after so many years... i can't really see the scar now...
scar of 2nd surgery was also on areola area, small one, faded abit but scar still can be seen now...
3rd one has 5 small scars and All not on areola area so the scars are more obvious... but i am not bothered by it as only my hubby will get to see it and he doesn't mind...

Remember to avoid foods with dark soy sauce as it will darken the scars which i believe so... especially the next few months after the surgery when the scar is healing... the scars will fade eventually but not so soon...

i hv no problem for breastfeeding, so don't worry... i was quite upset when i found out abt the last 5 lumps and kept asking myself why lumps like to come to my breasts... btw, my breasts already aren't big, only A size... my hubby also worried for me but i am more worried for my young daughter as i afraid she will get my gene...

Mine is also about 1 cm.. round and smooth in shape when i view the ultrascan pics.. The doc told me the scar will be quite small but the operation sounds abit scary from what the doc has described.. something like insert a needle in and scrap off the lump bit by bit? The doc assured me that the op will not affect breastfeeding in the future. By the way, i am just wondering if the lump will disappear after u do breastfeeding in the future?

i did ask my doc this question last time and he said maybe will disappear...

my 3rd surgery was done using Mammotome system... should be the one which u mentioned... done under local anesthesia and i can hear the machine cutting my lumps inside my breasts, then sucked them out...
