hmmm.... not sure if it's chinese or western dish. it's a dessert. yes, should be like egg tart filling but less egg taste, less yellowish.i've tried the recipe from this website (http://www.dicktang.com/kitchen/steanegg.htm), doesn't work... seems like it's too watery and too sweet. it actually took an hour plus to cook it, the outcome still too watery.

Nat's version reads like a low fat version. Amaretto is almond liquer, not coffee flavoured. That's why this recipe calls for coffee.
I've tried making tiramisu a few times, even went as far as buying expresso from Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Forget it.
All you need is to invest in a bottle of Kahlua (coffee liquer), this really packs a punch.
I can't remember the amount of ingredients I used, but after comparing recipes I found online, no hard and fast rules for the proportion, at the end of the day, it's to taste
You can find all the ingredients from Cold Storage:
Savoiardi (sp?) sponge finger biscuit
Kahlua (or liquer + expresso coffee)
Marscapone cheese (Italian cream cheese in a flat tub)
Sugar to taste
2-3 Eggs
Cocoa powder
Dissolve some sugar in Kahlua, sugar to taste. Amount depends on how wet you like your tiramisu (I like it wet!)
Drizzle over/soak into Sponge finger biscuits, Savioiardi (sp?)
Seperate eggs. My last attempt was too eggy (used 4!)
-Beat egg yolk with some sugar till pale and foamy.
-Beat egg white till soft peaks.
-Beat marscapone cheese till stiff. Well, can add some light flavoured liquer if you like, Amaretto, Grand Marnier (orange), Kirsch (cherry), Arrack (made from coconut)
-Fold all 3 together.
Line dish with soaked sponge fingers and layer on marscapone mixture and repeat.
Dust over with cocoa powder. Chill. DONE!
Marscapone is quite expensive, 8-9 bucks for the smaller tub. Some recipe substituted some of the marscapone cheese with sour cream which I did.
The more egg white you put in, the lighter and fluffier your tiramisu. This version disappears fast
The less eggs, the denser the texture.
The real tiramisu is more of a pudding. If you want really a cake-like product, look for a tiramisu cheesecake recipe.

I didn't have enough expresso for my sponge fingers. So I ended up with one batch made from Kahlua. I couldn't tell the difference:yay: The amount of $$ I paid for the expresso was ridiculous, more than 50% of what the marscapone costs.

this recipe's from my bf's sis, wrote it down after we made one together for my dad last father's day, and it was really quite nice.
<b>Ingredients</b>
2 packets of lady fingers biscuit
2 packets of 250 ml cream (liquid type)
250g mascarpone cheese
dark coffee (i use nescafe)
rum
3 tablespoons of sugar
1 egg
chocolate powder
strawberries (optional)
<b>Procedure</b>
1) Put the 2 packets of cream into the food mixer, beat it until it becomes thicker.
2) Meanwhile, separate the egg into yolk and white.
3) The yolk is mixed with 3 tablespoons of sugar in a big bowl. Then add in all the mascarpone cream cheese into the bowl to mix thoroughly.
4) In a separate small bowl, beat the egg white. Pour this into the food mixer and mix it for a while and stop.
5) Mix the cream cheese and the contents in the food mixer.
5) Use a shallow container, put in dark coffee and add in a few tablespoons of rum (the amt is up to individual's taste, ratio is appoximately 1:3 for rum:coffee).
6) Dip each lady fingers into the mixture of coffee and rum and lay it on the container.
7) Over each layer of lady fingers, put a layer of cream enough to cover.
Continue to layer the biscuit and cream, should be about 3 layers of biscuit and cream.
9) Sprinkle chocolate powder over the top layer.
10) Refrigerate for at least one hour (best is overnight).
11) Decorate with strawberries if desired.

Cold storage biscuits section. These are really common in Singaporean supermarkets, you can just ask the staff if you still can't find themThey are also spelt Savioiardi or thereabout.
Actually, for my personal tastes, I'm thinking of switching to plain sponge cake rather than sponge biscuits :p The biscuits doesn't soak up the coffee liquer that evenly.
Liquer in general are quite expensive. I'm not familiar with prices now but I would expect it to be around $40 for the smaller bottle.
