Givaudan is the biggest of all and Singapore house the AP sector.

There are other smaller players in the industry but yup. These 5 are the hothouse.

Avg 4 points right? A few of my colleagues are from there.

If you want to become a fragrance-ist then you have to take the Chemistry module. FST is more for Flavourists.

perfumery is more to art than science though. You don't really need to know how to synthesize the molecule but you need to know how to re-create a scent from your memory. this means that you must of superior olfactory memory, able to remember the smell and possible composition to create the scent. Most of the perfumes are inspired by something or some place.

I know the creator for Musc Ravageur is a chemist. but then, most of them have to graduate from the some schools of perfumery in Grasse, France before you can join those prestigious fragrance houses.

If you take chemistry only, you will probably do the mass production and rarely the creation. Even then, mass producing is enough--- can 'steal' some home and use.

Christopher Sheldrake, nose for Serge Lutens and co-nose for Chanel Les Exclusifs, is from Quest International which was acquired by Givaudan.

AFAIK, a chemistry degree is a pre-requisite for trainee perfumer. After which, the company will send you to HQ for training intensively. Subsequently, it's trial and error as well as experience before you can be given a full portfolio to make new fragrance for perfumes.

That being said, products like detergents, washing liquids etc also needs the work of a perfumer thought I am not sure what level the perfumer must be in order to forumulate these.

Are all of you guys/girls perfumers? or have studied perfumery? Any of you guys willing to be interviewed or willing to be a co-editor for a site?=D I'm actually looking for some help here for my own site. I'm definitely an enthusiast in fragrance but I lack the knowledge honestly.
