i think that for some people who can converse well in English, their written English might not be as good and vice versa.
I think practising helps and we can start with people we are always with, like bf/gf, family or colleagues. For me, it helps as my colleagues are non-Chinese ;p
I took a short Public Speaking course and i think it has helped me to conquer a bit of my fear. But the best part of the course is, i know i am not alone and there are many people who find it difficult to strike a conversation in English as Mandarin is their Mother tongue.
Anyone know of any courses where i can inprove my pronounciation?
Thank you!
I try to juggle my dialect, mandarin and English as they are equally important when comes it interactions with family member and foreign business associates. I subscribe to Business and Straits Times and will take down some phrases when from the papers. I think it helps when I communicate with people. Try going to the library to borrow books on English books as an additional source of learning.
I so love this thread. This is a very helpful one. I've read all the advices and I think I will follow some advices like listening to radio, reading english books and watching english movies more often. But honestly reading will be the hardest part because I am not a bookish person. As much as I want to enroll with English schools but its not my financial priority as of the moment. I will lean on self-study first and practicing it through composing correct grammar and try to use correct words as much as I can. I do believe practice can give big improvements in time. Patience is the key.
I love this thread too.British Council really not good? But all my friend suggest me go there for learning english. Can you guys suggest any best english tuition centre for me?
British Council according to my friend is not that bad. The certificate is what people want from there. Learning is just second of what they want to get from this school. But of course you will still learn depends on your willingness and attentiveness. You have to learn from the classes because you have to pass the exam to get the certificate. So I think learning also depends on the student and not only on the school's good service.
Besides British council, is there any other schools thats offering similar courses? Does MDIS or SIM offers short courses on speaking good english?
