Hi guys,
I need your help here. I am fresh grad from the local uni. I went into IT-business major because I was initially interested in IT & biz. After my 4 years of university, I realise i enjoy marketing more than anything. I applied for various marketing positions. I got shortlisted for interview. but everyone asked me the same question: Why dont you take a degree in marketing rather than an IT-business degree. I tried to reply nicely saying i love doing both stuffs. but i enjoyed the marketing the most.
Does anyone has the same dilemma? I found my interest rather late during university. so cant switch course. What should i do if i still want to venture into marketing career. Taking another degree is not possible cause I need to repay loans first.
You can still take a marketing degree at private uni. I too discover I like marketing after working in construction. This interest me but it has been tough for me. Business course are relatively hard for me but I am still trying too... I love my job now and I love marketing. However, in my case, I will choose construction bec I got more experience. The marketing is just my backup option in the event construction line goes down.
Why don't you go into digital marketing? Your IT knowledge would be relevant.
Gain some experience in it and then move to marketing. It is very easy to move from digital marketing to marketing.
Alternatively, it might be easier for you to get a internship in marketing and then try to find a perm job after you have experience.

hi there! My degree was in Business Computing and my Diploma is in Business IT. But I'm doing marketing for a IT company now. =D Go figure.
Although it is quite difficult to get into a marketing job without the marketing education background, it is not impossible. It will probably take you some time to find a company which is willing to hire a non-experienced marketer, be it in education or experience. Or go into a career which skillsets are transferrable and value add you as a marketer in future? I went from customer service to sales to marketing.
Part of your IT education gives you an edge over the rest who are not IT educated. It's the digital era now. It makes you easier to pick up and converse with vendors who are IT trained. =D
Have confidence in yourself. Try to package and market yourself well. You can do it!
