Default Lost In What I Want To Work In The Future

Hello everyone, i need help from you guys. Actually, I graduated last year december and actually wanted to go for my degree course in june but in the end, i give up and decided not to as i wanted to explore what i want to do in my life and think carefully what to study first. So right now i had been jobless for a month because before that i was waiting to enroll in my degree course but in the end i give up. I know, is stupid and waste of time. That's why i want to start looking for a job right now because im already going 22 this year!

Anw, I'm lost in what I want to work as. I had a diploma certificate but all the agencies that introduce me the jobs doesn't really appeal me. Maybe im too fussy but i'm really lost on what i want to work as. And, recently, there is this insurance company call me up and she wanted me to work as a financial consultants. She talked to me and i seems very keen on the job but just that i'm afraid i couldn't do it because i have to really talk to people about the insurance stuff and face rejections. But the pay are quite attractive. So you see, i'm really in deep thoughts on what i really want to work as.

I want to work at a environment which i get to know alot of people but am afraid of huge or big companies because i know im not up to that standard to face it yet. I'm seriously lost!!!

How you are feeling right now is very normal. Everyone in life will go through this stage even at the age of 30 or 40. We will feel lost at a certain point of time and we wouldn't know which way to go. Have more confidence in yourself and very soon you will find a way out, you will see your direction and move towards it.

    Totally agree with you!

My take: try out all sorts of jobs. Since you don't quite know what you excel at or what you like best, you will find out only by doing it! Don't ever think that by taking on a job, you are stuck forever in it. Even if you leave a job you do not like, you take away EXPERIENCE and friendships (if ure lucky) with you.

Personally, I think it's time for you to do something to help yourself to change your mentality on yourself. First of all, you are not stupid for giving up your degree course, I believe you must have a good reason to do so. Besides, you can always enroll again in another time.

When the agencies introduce you jobs that you are not appeal to, it is normal. I am too not appeal to some of the jobs my recruiter introduces me. I think it is important to find out yourself what kind of career you will like to have. What's your strong interest in?

In every jobs you are definitely going to face the cons and not so pleasant side of it.
Say for example in the list below:

An administrator (People who prefers desk-bounded job and dealing with papers/system)
The not so pleasant side: Need to do last minute job because colleagues handed in certain documents late to you. You may feel bored after awhile because what you are doing is going to be the same routine, the process from a to z.

A customer service (People who likes providing service to customers but not really into sales)
The not so pleasant side: Handles numerous kinds of complains from customers. From rude to weird customers, any kinds even the most unimaginable by you. One may get demoralized after facing so many complains from customers.

Sales person (People who likes to communicate with people and drives sales)
The not so pleasant side: Having to meet the sales target every month and also meet very competitive colleagues can be very tiring for some people.

There is no perfect job, even the job that you are very interested in always comes with the not so pleasant issues. However, if because of this you give up, this just means 2 things.

    1. You do not want this career that badly after all because you are unable to accept the unpleasant issues of the career.
    or
    2. You are just someone who wants everything to goes well and will not be able to accept things that don't always go smoothly.

If you are number 1, re think thoroughly what you truly want in your career.
If you are number 2, I think it's good if you start to tune your views on jobs.

It's nothing to be afraid to join a big organization as you have not give yourself the opportunity to give your best shot. How do you even know you will not be able to meet their standard?

This is like telling yourself you will definitely fail in everything even before trying, not even the first time.

If you always feel this way, it just means that you are not confident in yourself. Believe in yourself. Having a low confidence in yourself, regardless being in small or big organization, you will just not be able to perform the best that you can.

Sad to say that in this current society, you need some 'paper' and 'experience'.
I would suggest that you find a job that you are interested in, and continue gaining experience.

There's all kind of people out there. It depends on how you approach, and how you go about facing them.
Running away from it doesn't solve the issue... Facing it, and counter the problem, will gain you another experience in dealing with different kind of people.
Don't be afraid of trying it... But just don't give up without even trying... or you will end up nothing in the end...

Hey Verlonda, i am in the same state as you, lost in what i should do in future. But you are young, you still have the time to think.. im nearing 30 and i still dont know what is suitable for me or what i want to do. The worst part is, i have already underwent 1 career change:

spend 2++ years in career path 1, realise i cant do it forever, so i did not cont my contract, was jobless for 7 mths before i went to study for 1 full year for the next career path. Now, with less than 2 years experience, i already felt this new career path is not what i want. (realise im too introvent for this line) Right now this is my 5th co since i step into the workforce, just pass a mth of working in this new pl.

This is really depressing and i've already start to feel e drag to go work. The thought of just quiting just grows everyday. Im not afraid to try new things but with my age, it is so difficult to do so. my resume is just messy.. so far my work are all contract based, except the current one.

Sigh..... everyday im trying my best to convince myself that i can do it.. abit mentally torturing...

So Verlonda, have you found what you want to do?

I myself am also looking to have a career change. Hope that its gonna be ok.
Having too many career change will make it look that you are clueless to what you want to you potential hirers.
Try to find something which you can tap both your expereience.

This is one stage whereby all of us will go through. I have been through it, have changed jobs couple of times. I feel so lost at one stage that i almost gave up on everything. But i'm glad i have the determination to strive on and work hard. No matter what happens, don't ever give up. Look on the bright side of life ok. Let us all encourage one another and not feel down at times.

Sigh... nowaday working is such a drag... oh god.... really hope i will be able to find something i want and enjoy.. going work being unhappy is such a toll.... major depression

Most importantly, find out where your interest lies, all our life we need to work, but once you find the directions and interests, everything will be alright then.

Can try running a business or do some freelance jobs (eg tuition coordinator) while looking for you real interest.
