    Default Upset @ work

I really dunnoe what to do. I have a colleague who claims that she is very busy everyday and always complain to boss that she is overloaded and likes to push work to me. Well she is not as busy but often works overtime to convince the boss. I feel upset as she has handover quite alot of work to me with full support from boss. What should i do?

Gal, can you talk to your boss about it? Since she doesn't have much work on hand, and she stays back late to work overtime, then what does she do at her desk? Play games? Chit chat with her friends on the phone? Why don't she just go home rather than stay in the office and pretend all the time. Isn't it tiring for her to put on an act everyday. Well, no matter where we work, we are bound to meet all kinds of people like her. Take it easy, i have my fair share of such people too. Really gets on my nerves.

@CherryBali: I guess shes really not tired of acting everyday. No point talking to boss cos she has her way with boss. What about you? Did you talk to your boss about it?

If she hands over her work to you, at least you learn more things right? Think of it in a positive way.

reminds me of an ex colleague.. she thinks the office is her home, where she receives pampering from the parents and orders the maid around.

Are you able to make a list of jobs that she pushes to you as well as a list of work that you are supposed to do? Maybe if you keep such records as well as the time taken for you to do them, you can use it to discuss with your boss. Don't think of it as a complaint session but a REVIEW session on whether you are overloaded because after-all, if you are overloaded, the quality of the work might be affected.

If your boss insisted that no one is able to share your workload, you can use it as a leverage to ask for more pay to compensation since you are doing more than others.

I tried asking for increment also, when my ex colleagues also push all the shitty work to me. But that mean boss of mine said he can easily employ another person to takeover my work, and with a lower salary as well. I hate him for saying that. So ungrateful as i have been working hard for him for more than 8 years. I hardly lunch out, usually i will packed food back to the office, work and eat at the same time. But he doesn't appreciate me at all.

kaoriko - I know what you mean. I used to work very hard for an ex boss. I even came to work early each day to learn more about the operating system so that I can help her for entire 7 years. I always pull out extra to help her tide through all the peaks because I thought since I was single, I can put in extra hours. I always volunteer to clear mess so that the job can be handed over to other staff for maintenance. I always help to train new staff without complain. in the end, you know what she said to me in my face: You are stupid to put in these extra hours. I never ask you to do that.

sigh! Finally I understand why my mentor always say "NEVER LOVE YOUR COMPANY (unless you own the company) OR LOVE YOUR BOSS". The reason is because such feeling just hinder you from moving on.

I could easily look for another job but this boss of mine always try to persuaded me to stay on by giving me "sweet" bits or "pity" stories about how she cannot do without me whenever I show any inclination to look for new job. Eventually she shows her true face after I decided to transfer to another department. She even laughed at me behind my back for being old-maid and married to the company.

These are the kind of ugly people you are bound to meet in life. I used to hate her a lot but now I tried to be thankful that she allows me to learn her true face early in my life so that I can be mentally prepared to meet more such people.

Be responsible for your own life. Your boss cannot make your life miserable unless you allow them to do that to you.

We are perhaps in the same situation. My ex boss told me that it is not his fault that my health is not so good. It is me myself who don't know how to take care of my own health. Don't put all the blame on him. But i really skip my meals when work is so busy that i don't have time to eat, i don't have people to help me, i don't even have time to go toilet. I was so hurt and upset when he said those words to me. Very heartless ex boss i used to work for.

Thanks for sharing ur experiences. I agree it's really painful & hurting to hear bosses say such things. For my case, boss even told me to accept whatever shit she pushes to me. I really do not understand the rationale behind this. Total disappointment. Just because i do not complaint and do not act busy i gotta work so much more.

Do u think bosses really think people who ot are really overloaded? I'd thought it's probably due to inefficiency. Sigh!

well, if you are doing OT due to inefficiency, I believe that you should work with your boss so that your boss can help you with that. I was once so swam with work that I could not handle any of the deadlines. In the end, I surrendered and asked my boss for help. She sat down with me and we worked out the time needed for each task and their deadlines. We even went into details on like what day of the week or month, I should do what. It was tough but once I went through the teething period and know the job flow better, I don't need that kind of rigid schedule and can do my own schedule no matter what kind of adhoc appears.

Be a bit more "sweet mouth" and ask nicely. If your boss think that you think highly of him/her, he/she is more likely to help you. Or ask a senior to help you.

That is of course provided you have the habit of keeping a list and keeping track of your time. I used to be an auditor so I have the habit of keeping an outstanding list and time log. I still do that now even though I am now supposedly in a Partial management position. I do that so that I can review what I have done so far for the past month and see if I can improve on them. This habit really help me a lot. I can easily do that with the micrsoft outlook time calendar log and color the type of work I do each day. It also help me to prepare myself against those "backstabber" who like to question me on what job I spent my time on. You see I have a global-support job now which means the jobs I work on may not be related to local office but other offices overseas. Some local staffs with more routine-based jobs are "red eyes" or have too much time on their hands thus like to speculate what I am doing and complain to bosses that I "shake legs" all the time. At least with such records, I know what I have been doing so far.

I used to be like so busy and cannot go toilet etc. stress myself up and cannot sleep in the end take sleeping pills....eat to tackle stress and in the end got myself high blood pressure. Like you, my intial reaction is BLAME the boss and job. In the end, I learnt to realise that I need to take responsibility of what happen to me. I CHOOSE to abuse my body needs over work. Now I don't do that. I tried to remind myself to take some time off for toilet breaks etc. I had two water bottles at work and I filled them up in the morning and make sure I finished at least one fo them before lunch and the other before I left the office.

I make sure I prioritize and plan my work so that I can be mentally prepared for OT days and relax on non-OT days.

It is difficult to do that but you must try because no one will help you unless you take the first step to help yourself.

way to go babe , the boss didnt know there are consequences of hurting (what if the person is not around anymore, even the soul wont rest in peace and her next generation) ; probably yaki had lesser desire to even work as the boss believe every word from sweet mouth (colleague say she's not political but then backstabbing and create the "image" of yak in front of the boss and other colleagues; thats the reason they say if ur not nasty , then u shouldnt be afraid of anything
