Hi,
Anybody saw the article "Dispute over $84" in the NewPaper (10 May 0?
A tutor was sacked just 1 day into her tuition assignment. Then the tuition agency demanded to receive their 50% commission. The tutor refused and the story appeared in the media.
Before we continue, this thread is not about who is right or wrong. What caught my attention here is a statement by the Tuition Agency's manager. It seems that he tried to threaten the tutor by saying something like "I know your name and I know where you stay. Don't play punk with me."
I believe many cotters here are also registered with tuition agencies and upon reading this article, it dawn upon me that we (tutors) are at a losing end should a dispute erupts, isn't it? All our personal data are available to them. I also found that there is no option to remove ourselves from the database once we registered.
So cotters, like to give your point of view?
After being a private tutor for almost a year, i agree with you that we as tutors are losing ends. I faced all sorts of nonsense, such as student claimed to her parent that i can't teach where the student was busy scribbling answers and workings or asking answers from me, and things like after a lesson, parents want EVEN BETTER tutors, or even make false accusations like i'm weak at SCIENCE when i'm a Science diploma graduate.
And alot of times, i feel that tuition agencies believe what the parents and students said more than what we (tutors) said, at the end, we are the ones who suffer from bad reputations. Agencies are not lack of tutors, we're the ones who needs assignments for a living.
erm..where to sign up as tutors if you're only a poly students? sorry..moutain tortise here![]()
heys, for poly students, your L1R5 have to be good, else they do not take you. you can register at those tutor agencies online, or you can email me your details to deebzlitterati@gmail.com
LET ME KNOW your timing and what u can teach. thanks.
currently, i have this girl WHO REFUSED TO PAY me. i dunno why, i taught her for 2 lessons. 25/hr, meaning 75dollars worth.
she said that i am weak in my math, btw, i am teaching her Emath and have been tutoring for 4 years already. since aft my olvs. btw, i got A1 for both my A/EMATH and B for ALV and major in business math currently in uni.
her mom is being a b itch refusing to pay me.
what can i do?
$75 is actually a lot.
Hi deebz,
As tutors do not fall under any protection scheme, we can only rely on the paying parties' good faith that they won't default on payment. How about the girl's father? Is he also singing the same tune? Maybe ask them to pay at least 50% for your time and effort.
hi all,
i'm looking for tutors strong in English, with at least a B3 for General Paper English or equivalent. please email your grades and any sample of writing if you do have at liethuang@yahoo.com.sg.
i've a few assignments on hand and am looking for tutors in English.
i've a friend who was asked by the tuition agency itself to cheat on their customers, asking her to pretend as an undergraduate when she was a jc student.
that's how far people would go to show that their desperate for money.
anything for money man, even if it's to go against out conscience and morals, if there was even one in the first place.![]()
I was once a tutor a year or so back. I agree that sometimes, we are at the losing end because most of the time, the agent or the parents will try not to pay your share once they stop the assignment or unhappy with the tutor. My agent still owe me $200 (still ignoring my call); I took it as a lesson learnt. That's why I lost interest in tutoring and I learn to appreciate of having a job with a stable income now.![]()
in fact, nowadays I inform the agent from the beginning that I collect by the session. In other words, first 2 lesson agent collect themselves. SUbsequent session I'll start to collect money. I think its just a way to protect our interest as tutors.
Perhaps if every tutor start doing this, we can start the trend and parents/ agent can no longer cheat our money.
Papaya:
Good idea. But you know, some parents very what one. Die die cannot means cannot.![]()
i am actually teaching 3 tutition (plus I'm current teacher). These 3 parents got no problem paying by the session. Recently one parent rejected the idea. Hence I also rejected the assignment. After a few days the agent keep begging me to take the assignment (and consider bi-weekly payment) cause he cannot find a replacement. But I still didn't take. Since agent is also earning my money so they need to work for our interest too.
i was once a stupid tutor!
i taught the kids(brother and sis) for a month and bought them assessment books. however, the mum keeps delaying the fees. giving reasons like if she put the money on the table, the kids will steal etc. because the kids exams were coming and i didnt want to give them so i'd asked my friend to take over. then i kinda accidentally dragged my friend in as well. after 4 lessons, she didn't pay her my fees as well as hers. saying that her family is facing problems and she's divorcing her husband. and this time, my friend decided to STOP cos it's 2 months fees that she's owned us as well as the assessment books money which amounts to $38.
BUT when i went over to their house to check, the neighbours didn't mention about the couple's problems and the kids told me that their parents were not quarrelling and still sleeping in the same room!
i left my number and she called me back saying that she'll pay me back by installments. first installment will be due on 5th Aug but i've received nothing. and when i sms her, she said that she'll sms me when she's transferred the money over. now's like 16 Aug and i've not received anything.
and this thing happened in feb. till now, i've not received a single cent. i'm so dumb. and i even dragged my friend in. sigh! caused trouble for both me and my friend!
I have both gd and bad experiences with teaching. I only teach primary school kids. Some are really cute, and all, while some can be quite naughty. I've my share of not-so-nice parents too.
I have this experience where this family made me sit on this dining table to teach tuition, and they will sit on the opposite side to surf laptop, listen to music, talk to frineds on HP etc..
and sometimes the dad switched off the tv, and just sit on the opposite chair to see how I teach. And sometimes he "laughed" at my jokes (meant for the student only)..And sometimes he will interrupt my lesson, and say things to his son like "Like that, you also don't know!!"..
And they look at me as if I own them money as well, as this went on for like two months. So needless to say, I'm out of there.![]()
I want to teach tuition but i don't know where should i start from. And i am just a poly student.
