    hi pills,

i think perhaps $25 should be the market rate for a grad? i'm not very sure as i'm a trainee teacher and have recently been charging my students $30 an hour for tuition. i've got 5 years of teaching experience though, so that helps, especially when i ask the agency to negotiate for higher pay for me.
most of the time, i dont waste my breath on scolding them. it also helps that all my pupils are rather well behaved and very motivated, to the point that they make me feel like a lazy slob and ashamed of how slack i was back in school then!!
but i've taught this p2 boy who was really hyperactive and wanted to play all the time and i was very stern with him. i didnt waste much time on scolding him but i would just keep quiet and stare at him when he was clowning around.
but this works on pri school kids better, i'm not sure for secondary school kids.

have been teaching private tuition for 5 yrs, charging 20-30 bucks per hour depending on the level of the student. Most of the time I met with students that dont really pay attention, like kintra, i will give a very stern look or just ask him or her to reply what i have said.

if they cant reply me, i will tell them to pay attention and explain over again.

the thing is my student will do his work when i m stern.

but i don't like being stern all the time n when i relax a bit n just start chatting more with him, he'll lax as well.

furthermore, whether i m stern or not, he will most prob not finish his work. 'coz his mum is always busy working n there's no one home to breath down his neck.

he won't do his work in this case then. he only does slightly better when his mum screams at him to do work which is only at nite when she comes back from work.

i fidn it diff to persuade him to do. i have talked to him about it before n he'll do well for 2-3 lesson before laxing again....

i personally think that maybe a change in teaching method will help. perhaps you can change into some more fun and get him involve in some maths games?

i will tend to use games like monopoly , snakes and ladder, for each step my student moves, he or she has to solve a maths question. i always plan quiz and reward them when they do well

chocolatemousse: that sounds interesting.. i think it's hard for young kids to really sit down and concentrate on the work.. they just want to walk around, fidget, talk etc..

am thinking of getting a secondary school maths tuition assignment too! cause i am currently teaching 2 aunties conversational english.. and i want to take a secondary assignment so it's less taxing (once per week)..

anyone has any idea how to spice up english language learning tuition lessons?

    TIA!

me! i have been giving tuition after my As. $180 sounds fine to me.

i'm glad that i have nice students, who always pay attention. though some of them are quite lazy, they will still try their best to finish the work i gave them.

i don't believe in scolding unless the student really needs some

    hi air,

i dont get what you mean by irregular/unstable income. do you mean that tutors dont work all year round, hence we do not have any income for certain months?

as in during the hols period, some students may wanna take a break.. hence no income from him or her. no fixed income that is. another case is that since we collect $ every 8th lesson, every student's 8th lesson falls on a different date, so our 'pay day' every difficult to keep track...

i think the auntie wants something which she can like use in daily life.. yah.. taught her some idioms gradually..

her eldest grandson is already 21 this year! i was quite shocked to learn that during one lesson.. hee! guess all her grandchildrean are already quite old.. so she's got ample time on her hands..

sometimes it gets a bit frustrating and depressing cause it's not as easy to correct their pronounciation as with yound kids.. hee! but still not too bad.. cause i don't have the pressure of exams!
