Dear all,
I'll be starting work mid-June as an account exec at an ad agency. It is my first job. I understand that we would have to make a lot of calls. Is the phone allowance of $80 reasonable or too low still? As we have to bond with our clients, to what extend do we have to entertain them? eg. Play sports with them on weekends ah?
Are there any acc exec here that can tell me a little more about the prospect of account exec too? One of my current uni classmate says that it is a job of no return. Meaning to say, those in advertising won't be able to hop into marketing in future. I'm not sure if it is true.
Also, how long does it takes to advance to AM then AD?
Hi Nicole,
You will need to make lots of call - maybe, it really depends on your work, but $80 is not bad for phone allowance knowing that most of our plans are free-incoming and you will be making calls on your office phone most of the time. On top of that, giving you phone allowance would mean u are on call 24/7, if your client calls you at 11pm, you have to pick it up. Remember, the phone allowance is not to cover your entire phone bill, it is to cover what you use for work.
Account Executive in advertising does account servicing. You can hop into marketing, i have been on both the client side and ad agency side. It really depends on what you prefer, but marketing departments also like people with ad agency experience, because you will know when your ad agency is trying to smoke you.
Advancement is all dependent on performance. If you are really good, within 2 to 3 years, maybe you will advance to AM. In Advertising, qualifications only determine your initial pay scale. After that, it will all be dependent on your experience.
hope this helps!
hi how is the marketing industry? is it fun and interesting?
yes. fun and interesting
but depends on what kind of products and services.
be prepared to meet all sorts of people, tight deadlines, OT, sacrifice weekends
may have to travel a lot (within the country and overseas), talk a lot, write a lot
hey girls
anyone in advertising over here?
i'm a fresh grad, from university of queensland with BA (journalism and mass comm).
i've got an interview with a small ad agency coming up soon for a position in account servicing in a digital team.
does anyone know what a reasonable starting pay would be?
also, do relevant internships/additional skills (programming/html) help with getting a higher starting pay?
thanks in advance!![]()
Marketing is quite a creative industry to be in. It provides better solution to satisfy consumers needs. Customer will be the focus of the activities. There is an increase in the availability of highly coveted marketing positions. It can be an interesting and meaningful career to focus on.
i never work with that company but i initially accepted their job offer but rejected it in the end just last month lol. think there will be quite alot of OT cos they keep emphasising on meeting deadlines etc. but the people there seems nice! which position are you shortlisted for?
hi peeps in marketing.. may i check how much is the avg pay for a SIM degree holder with 4 yrs of marketing exp? i'm in my 2nd job, and is looking to change a new job..
agree with Pinkieoreo - industry is key. But it also depends on your marketing exp - all 4 years in one industry? Were you doing marketing for 4 years? What was your role in the marketing dept?
to be honest, marketing doesn't pay as well in big companies because they are not a profit centre, they are a cost centre. i know that in a pretty big company (retail), the assistant manager of a marketing dept only draws $3k plus. Degree or not.. honestly in marketing, it doesn't make a difference because your pay is dependent on your experience. But some companies do look at it when they hire as the filter, not so much of the pay.
depending on your next role you are looking at - if your experience matches up to it, then you have the ammunition to negotiate for 4k. Sometimes a new job is more than compensation, it is also the environment and the benefits that comes along with the job.
sometimes a higher pay will mean a bigger challenge. A problem that comes along with it is with a higher pay you have a new title (a higher position than your previous), but your previous experience does not prepare you adequately for the role because it encompasses management of staff, or even planning of budget on a bigger scale - all these you have to take into account if the higher pay you are asking for - are you able to fit into the shoes?
I am sharing based on my experience because when i was at the executive level, i skipped the senior executive position and was promoted straight to a manager. I wasn't prepared for the role, although i welcomed the income. We may be able to do very well in our previous roles, but going to another level is a different story. If you are doing very well in your job now, maybe you can start to learn the ropes of management from your bosses, and then maybe moving on will be very much easier.
Of course, if you believe you have what it takes, then go ahead!
just my 2cents worth![]()
Hi girls,
Thank you so much for sharing. Really appreciate it.![]()
