Hi all,
Bumping this up..
I am a fresh graduate and I'm contemplating between working for public or private sector. To me, I thought there was no much difference because my area is in HR and experience is probably what matters.
I have an offer now for Planning and Policy as HR exec in public sector, but I'm afraid that is a very specialised and mundane position. There will be no much job rotation until at least 2-3 years later. What is planning and policy all about? Is it a good specialized experience to go for? I'm more of an outspoken person in my private life but I'm not so sure bout' me in worklife..
This position is also located in the West and I'm in the East. Can cry. It's giving me a headache.. Not sure whether to accept a not![]()
i'm a fresh grad who's offered a job in the govt + pte sector..in the end i chose the pte sector cuz i think it'll allow me to learn more things. the pay and beneifts are definitely much lousier than the govt sector..but i guess there's a trade off.
Hmm, the pay is really a big difference, and I'm just afraid that the benefits of regional exposure and better experience is not really there, when I end up perhaps doing admin/minimal exposure if I'm really unlucky.Really confused, all my relatives are telling me to take it up. DAM.
i prefer the private sector...
but that is cause i'm a workaholic by nature..
i feel that the pace of work in the public sector is kind slow whereby things get done over a longer period of time as compare to private sector where the same job would probably be completed in a day..
public sector would be good for those who have a family and want a work-life balance environment..
private sector would be more suitable for those who like the adrenaline rush where everything is treated as urgent..and its more dynamic..
paywise, public sector can never match private sector with the exception of AGD, MAS, EDB, etc..
with regards to job stability, i think both are pretty similar.. the notion of "iron ricebowl" no longer exits mainly cause there are a number of govt agencies being privatised and due to overhaul of their operations, reduction in staff might be a possibility..
i find that the job scope at both public and private sector do allow me to learn and see different things at different angles.. their exposure are quite different from each other which only serve to increase my experience in the field..

I just started working about 10 months ago. but i would say i'm lucky to get into my current company. pte sector but US MNC, so benefits still consider ok. 14 days leaves + 14 days MC and other leaves that govt set. but each claim can only claim a max of $30, $300/yr. dental $100/yr.
quite true, my colleagues are always working and working.. unless the project finish, else they can work more than 12 hrs a day.
my frd who's working in the pte sector have more benefits. 21 days leave + 14 days MC. and her childcare leaves = family leaves. which in my company, is only for married employees.
work is quite peaceful there. OT for certain days. but bonus is good. if you want high bonus, join the govt. sector. they are count in months.
one thing for sure is if you can perform, there's definitely more potential for you to earn more in the private than public sector.
after reading this thread, it seemed to be truth that public sector's job is more stagnant and boring. But is it comparable to some MNC like what shan has mentioned? Her company is big and seemingly as good as the public sector.
I rejected my 1st job offer from public sector, and around 2-3 weeks later I got an offer from private sector MNC- doing consultancy. Pay is lower, but I believe the working and learning experience will far exceed that in a public sector.

Also, govt sector's bonus is not that good. regardless of whether the economy is good or bad, the bonus is more or less the same.
Thanks for the vote of confidence dearI really hope I make the right choice.
But I heard govt sector pays up to 3 months bonus. Thats quite comparable to private, no?
0.25 in july and the remaining in December. I dont find it attractive at all.
I truly agreed with what whitefrost had said. she expresses what i wanted to say.

Bumping up this thread though i'm not sure if this is the right place to post this...
I've left a statutory board earlier this year without a job, primarily because of the bosses' working styles and secondary, of the layers of processes and redtape. For this latest jobhunt, i did not restrict myself to only the private sector and applied for jobs in the civil service, other statutory boards and government-related organisations.
I've been offered a position in one of the government-related organisation and i find the job scope rather interesting and challenging (though not my ideal dream job which is to be my own boss heh), pay is slightly higher than my asking and location is right next to my home. Everything is all good except two factors: that there will be alot of presentations/public speaking which i'm not very good at and secondly, there will be much redtape and processes again.
All but one of my friend is telling me that i should take it up and this friend is actually an ex-colleague who is still at my ex-workplace. He said that if i couldn't take it (at my ex-workplace) previously, i shouldn't accept this offer since he heard from a friend that the redtape and processes are worse at this particular organisation. He also felt that i am obliged to take up the offer since it's the only offer so far and that i am worried that there will be none others to come by, which is quite true to a certain extent.
So right now, i'm quite frustrated coz i have no idea what i should do. My gut and logic tells me i should take it up coz work is subjective and it depends on the individual. My heart, however, is unable to get past the public speaking barrier and also partly concerned about the redtape that may come up. And there lies the dilemma i am in.
Anyone has switched from within the government sector and can share their experiences? I know this is a rather lengthy post so thanks all for bearing with me![]()

A stupid question.
Is a government-owned company considered government sector? Like SIA or Temasek?
